Sensex closes at a new high of 11,747
The Sensex zoomed by 108.89 points to close at 11746.90 against previous day's close of 11638.01. The Nifty gained 28.5 points to close at 3511.65 (3483.15).

Capital goods, healthcare , metal, bankex and automobiles stocks were the main drivers.

Healthcare index up 3.14 per cent to 4098.65 and capital goods index 2.6 per cent to 8725.63. Fast moving consumer goods, auto and bankex up more than one per cent each.

Cipla was the biggest gainer, (up 7% to 743) on 11.34 lakh shares.

Ranbaxy advanced 3.88% to Rs 472.20 on 21.76 lakh shares. It announced twin overseas acquisition in the last few days.

Patni computers surged 3.07% at Rs 456.00 after the company announced its tie-up with Mercer for opening a global operations centre in India.

TVS Motors surged 11.38% at Rs 175.20 after a prominent retail brokerage put a buy on the stock.

L&T spurted 3.90% to Rs 2,645. It bagged a road project worth Rs 550 crore which is likely to be completed by the company in 30 months. There is market talk that the company will announce a bonus issue shortly.

Technology stocks were under selling pressure, ahead of March quarterly results. Satyam Computers lost 1.90% to Rs 857.70, while TCS slipped 0.71% to Rs 1,934. Infosys declined 1.30% to Rs 3,112.30.

L&T was the top-traded counter on BSE with a turnover of Rs 195.73 crore. ICICI Bank followed with a turnover of Rs 121.32 crore. Ranbaxy clocked a turnover of Rs 102.64 crore.

ACC moved up 3.98% at Rs 827.25. Among the other cement scrips, India Cement surged 6.63% at Rs 181.70, Gujarat Ambuja moved up 1.95% at Rs 107.00 and JK Cement jumped up 1.86% at Rs 177.80.

Nalco surged 3.56% at Rs 306.65, Hindustan Zinc moved up 3.95% at Rs 551.35.

Among the other metal scrips, Tata Steel moved down 0.13% at 541.40, Essar Steel moved down 1.28% at Rs 50.10 and Gujarat NRE slips 0.15% at Rs 98.85.

The NSE Nifty ended with a rise of 28 points to 3,510.90.
